Vet: Microchipping small dogs can be fatal
All dogs in England, Scotland and Wales are now legally required to have been chipped by the time they are eight weeks old. A law has been in place in Northern Ireland since 2012.
The Government estimates more than a million dogs have yet to be chipped, but some vets are worried microchipping might be dangerous in small dogs.
Vet Richard Allport runs the Natural Medicine Centre in Hertfordshire and said microchipping "can go wrong for tiny dogs or small puppies".
He said dogs can die from haemorrhage or paralysis if the chip is inserted incorrectly or if the dog is too young.
Mr Allport said these fatalities happen "very rarely [...] but there are risks".
