Mother: Why I had baby 'swab seeded' with my fluid
A mum of three has explained why she chose to 'swab seed' her newborn son against the advice of medical professionals.
Baby seeding is when a baby born by caesarean section is swabbed with fluid from the birth canal, so that the baby is exposed to beneficial bacteria that it would have come across if born naturally.
However, experts say there's no evidence that seeding is beneficial, and it could expose the baby to infections such as STDs and strep B.
Alice Monkman, who swab seeded her youngest son, Herbie, said: "Every mother wants to give [their] baby the best start in life... when I felt quite upset about having to have a caesarean, it empowered me."
