Mum: Put late partner on my child's birth certificate
A mother whose partner died three weeks before their daughter was born is calling for a change in the law, after she was told she couldn't register him as the father on the birth certificate, because they weren't married.
Joana Niemeyer had to spend more than £1,000 getting DNA samples, bills and a relationship summary to court, in order to prove that her deceased partner, David McNamara, was indeed the father of their child.
She told ѿý Radio 5 live Daily's Adrian Chiles that she believes it's the father’s right to be named on her daughter’s birth certificate.
"It's in David's rights that he is on the birth certificate as the father, because he is the father.”
The ѿý Office says: "In the sad circumstances where the parents are not married and the father has died before the birth has been registered, we rely on a court to make a declaration of parentage after considering the relevant evidence.”
