The end of the carnival queen?
Southend Carnival organisers are ditching their carnival queen because the number of people applying for the role is declining and the role is "too old fashioned" and "too traditional".
Gemma Cartwright, who is vice-chair of the Carnival, told 5 live Daily's Peter Allen that they’re considering the idea of having a carnival ambassador instead, with the position open to young men as well as teenage girls.
She said: "In its current form, it isn't right for us. We've decided not to have a selection this year, pending feedback from young people."
