Japan- Why did a 'severe shake' cause minor material damage?
The earthquake in Japan on Thursday registered at the highest level of intensity on the seismic scale, meaning residents in Kumamoto experienced severe shaking during the quake. However the damage to buildings and other infrastructure was relatively minor. Rupert Wingfield Hayes investigates:
