Syrian architect: Why I kept my family in destroyed Homs

A Syrian architect, who remained in the war-torn city of Homs with her young family throughout six years of civil war, has described the experience as "like living in prison".

Mother-of-two Marwa Al-Sabouni, 34, spent two years house-bound, and had mortar shells fall around her home. She says they decided to stay because she had “nowhere to go”.

"We have only one street that separates us from the destruction... the place will shake, the walls and windows, glass will fall,” she said. Her architectural studio, pictured in the clip, suffered extensive damage in the conflict.

Marwa added that although the recapture of the ancient city of Palmyra was important for history, she worried people were “forgetting the cities”.
