Cancer sufferer: Why I kept illness secret from my partner

A bowel cancer sufferer who kept his diagnosis secret from his partner says he did it "out of love" and "protection".

The man, known only as "Daniel," did not want to worry his partner - who he was a carer for - as it was initially diagnosed as a "minor problem".

He told her the truth after realising she had "the right to know", "regardless of the fact she had a long term mental health problem".

"I might not be here in six months time and that's reality which is horrendous for her," he said. "it's something I have to be honest about because there's only so far you can carry a lie when you're on your death bed."
