Anorexic on care: 'They feed you up and throw you out'

An anorexic woman from Devon has criticised the treatment she received from the NHS.

An anorexic woman from Devon has criticised the treatment she received from the NHS.

Sophie Hartwell, 23, was diagnosed with the condition five years ago. Her story has recently raised questions about the standard and availability of treatment for eating disorders in the NHS.

Her family have now set up a crowd funding page to raise money to provide her with treatment in America.

She spoke to 5 live Daily's Adrian Chiles about the difficulty of accessing treatment:

"I can say that I always wanted to get better. It's just that there are barriers in the way of that. No one seems to be able to break down those barriers to make me get better."

In response to Sophie’s story, Haldon Eating Disorder Service - Devon Partnership NHS Trust said:

"We are very proud of services provided by the team at the Haldon Unit, which has an extremely good reputation and is regarded by many as an international centre of excellence in the field of eating disorders.”

“We have done a great deal to try and support Sophie, including exploring residential treatment options outside Devon, and we are sorry that she feels that we were unable to meet her needs. Although we have had long waiting times for psychological therapies they are now among the best in the country, and we continue to talk to our commissioners about funding a dedicated community eating disorders service for Devon."
