Queen of Katwe: From Ugandan chess star to Disney
The Queen of Katwe is the story of a Phiona Mutesi from the slums of Uganda, who by chance, discovers she can play chess and becomes a champion. It's been turned into a new film by Disney and is based on a book of the same name by the author, Tim Crothers.
Phiona is now a national champion and competes in international tournaments. Tim Crothers says Phiona dreams of becoming a "grandmaster and also has a dream of becoming a paediatrician.
This is someone who, aged three, lost her father to Aids, aged six dropped out of school. Aged nine turned up at this chess programme with no ability to read or write. The fact she's made it as far as she has ....is extraordinary."
