The University of East Anglia has scrapped the tradition of students throwing their mortarboards into the air after graduating on health and safety grounds. The university say that a number of students have been hurt by falling hats in recent years.

Dotun Adebayo spoke to Rachel Egan who had been injured by a mortarboard at her graduation in 2012. Her and some friends wanted a picture with their mortarboards in the air.

She said: 鈥淥ne of the mortarboards came down and struck me in the corner of my eye and left a bruise. Another one hit a nearby car.鈥�

When asked if she had put the incident behind her, she said: 鈥淚鈥檓 definitely over it now, I just remember it being quite painful!鈥�
