Graduate: Flying mortarboard 'struck me in the eye'

The University of East Anglia has scrapped the tradition of students throwing their mortarboards into the air after graduating on health and safety grounds. The university say that a number of students have been hurt by falling hats in recent years.

Dotun Adebayo spoke to Rachel Egan who had been injured by a mortarboard at her graduation in 2012. Her and some friends wanted a picture with their mortarboards in the air.

She said: “One of the mortarboards came down and struck me in the corner of my eye and left a bruise. Another one hit a nearby car.â€

When asked if she had put the incident behind her, she said: “I’m definitely over it now, I just remember it being quite painful!â€
