Top performance coach: "Self esteem is massive"

Performance coach Dave Alred has helped leading sports stars including Jonny Wilkinson deliver in moments of high pressure. He explains the role self-esteem plays in success.

Leading performance coach Dr Dave Alred has worked with some of our leading sports stars, including former world number one golfer Luke Donald and England rugby goal kicker extraordinaire Jonny Wilkinson, helping them deliver in crunch moments.

He explains that "self-esteem is massive" when it comes to maximising an individual's potential in high pressure situations.

Speaking to 5 Live, Dave Alred says his starting point as a coach is "telling people what they do well" and stressing their true potential rather than any perceived weaknesses: "I'm a great believer in... [starting] by seeing what's good."

And he says he prefers to start from the assumption that anyone he works with will be "attentive, responsible and reliable" -- as "sometimes when we start with a negative then people just respond to it."

Alred insists that boosting an athlete's self-image before anything else helps unlock their latent ability.

"I've learned from the early days that self-esteem is the trigger for performance... you've got to start with that."
