Cruise couple: Norovirus ruins trip of a lifetime

Norovirus couple Gillian Frith and Peter Downing say they spent three days quarantined in their cabin aboard the Balmoral cruise liner.

Gillian Frith and her partner Peter Downing described how their holiday on the Balmoral cruise liner, was ruined when Gillian became ill with Norovirus.

Speaking to 5 live's Sarah Brett, Gillian described what happened, "I had all the classic symptoms of Norovirus....It comes on very suddenly, that's the problem".

Gillian explained, she wasn't the only one on the cruise to be affected, "other people had very distressing episodes when they were ill in the corridor, at the restaurant table and somebody in the theatre, because it was quite uncontrollable",

Gillian and Peter told Sarah that thanks to Norovirus they both missed three days of their holiday, "we were quarantined in our cabin, the person sharing the cabin with the ill person is required to stay in with them as well, obviously to prevent spread".

The company that owns the cruise liner, Fred Olsen, said this in a statement: " Fred Olsen has announced compensation measures to any guests on board who have been required to remain in isolation within their cabins, and has also agreed a further gesture of goodwill in recognition of any loss of enjoyment and amenities to guests.
