A prisoner's story: Giving birth in custody
Mariam, a young woman who gave birth while serving a prison sentence said that she wasn't told anything about her rights as an expectant mother when she was first put in prison.
She told 5 live's Lesley Ashmall "I had no information, no extra food, or milk or bedding. I was in a regular cell with four other women and everything was going on in there, fights, it was still a normal regime. There was no seperation or extra safety for us".
The ex-prisoner also admitted that she had no idea whether she'd secured a place in a mother and baby unit until three days after giving birth as her paper work went missing.
