Do EU officials have 'exorbitant expense claims'?

The expense claims of EU officials "have got quite a lot better", said a Labour MEP and former European Council spokesman.

Richard Corbett was responding to claims by the Vote Leave campaign about £27 million spent on luxury items in one year, including £176,280 on luxury hotels, £931 on chocolate, £18,750 on chauffeur-driven cars and £42,657 on corporate away days.

Mr Corbett said the group, which wants the UK to leave the EU in next week’s referendum, had been responsible for "pretty dodgy figures" in the past.
