Head of Islamic council defends 'beat your wives lightly' suggestion
Pakistan's Council of Islamic Ideology recommended to the government that it should pass a law saying that it is permissible to lightly beat your wife. Although not legally binding, the proposal sparked outrage in Pakistan. A social media campaign against the suggestion was created with the hashtag #trybeatingmelightly, with people saying this so-called women's protection bill encourages men to abuse their wives. The head of the council spoke to Shaimaa Khalil.
