The VCR had ‘huge impact on our culture’

The last Video Cassette Recorder rolls off the production line later this month after over 40 years in production. The Japanese company Funai Electric has been finding it difficult sourcing parts to keep producing the machines, and last year they only sold only 750,000 units - down from a peak of 15 million a year.

Paul Zamarelli, founder of VHScollector.com said: “The VCR did for the motion picture what the printing press did for the printed word.”

VCRs were introduced in the 1970s but were superseded by DVD technology.

“The fact the VCR has been in production for 40 years shows the impact they have had on our culture,” Paul added.
