The Lake District and Yorkshire Dales national parks have been extended by 188 square miles, with campaigners hailing a "historic day".

Yorkshire Day is also being celebrated on 1 August, marking 1,141 years since Yorkshire was established.

Barrie Rutter, art director and founder of the Northern Broadsides theatre company, gives his praise for the area nicknamed "God's Own County".
