British swimmer Adam Peaty broke his own world record by winning in 57.12 seconds, and Britain's Jazz Carlin took silver in the women's 400m freestyle.
Dutch rider Annemiek van Vleuten suffered a horror crash in the final descent of the women's road race, and Team GB's flagbearer Andy Murray, and his brother Jamie, crashed out of the men's doubles with a defeat to hosts Brazil.
