Japan's emperor hints at wish to abdicate
In a rare televised address, the Japanese Emperor Akihito has said he was worried that age and ill health could soon prevent him from carrying out his full duties. Bill Emmott, a former Japan correspondent for The Economist newspaper, says the emperor is barred from making political statements such as directly asking for an abdication.
