BHP recorded a full-year net loss of $6.4bn, because commodity prices have plunged. The company produces everything from iron ore, coal, copper and uranium to shale oil and gas.

An auction is taking place for what remains of the American celebrity tittle-tattle website, Gawker. Earlier this year, the site was ordered to pay one-hundred-and-forty million dollars to the US wrestler, Hulk Hogan, forcing it to file for bankruptcy. A technology billionaire with a long-standing grudge had funded the case, it was later reported.

Chile is the second biggest salmon exporter in the world, after Norway, and boasts an industry that provides thousands of jobs and is worth billions of dollars. But recently it has taken a battering from a plague of toxic algae, which has already killed 25 million of the country's fish.
