Nigeria's Tomato Crisis

Earlier this year, Nigeria's tomato crops were devastated by the disease Tuta Absoluta. A state government in Northern Nigeria even declared a state of emergency after moths destroyed fields and threatened supplies of the country's leading staple food.

At the height of the crisis, the cost of a basket of tomatoes rose by over 3000 percent and tomato-free recipes for traditional dishes sprung up online. And restaurants have had to bear the cost of serving what has become a luxury food.
