Steve Parry: I beat a 'trumped up' Phelps in the pool
Former GB swimmer Steve Parry recounts defeating a young Michael Phelps.
"This guy came up to me - I didn't realise it was Phelps at the time... And he said 'I just want to let you know I'm going to beat you at the Olympics'. And I was like, 'Look at this trumped up kid!'"
"Embarrassingly, I was 23 and he beat me in Sydney and he was 15. It really was embarrassing."
"I got my revenge in the semi final in 2004 (Athens Olympics), but then just beat me in the final."
Boxing journalist Steve Bunce jokingly replied "I thinking about it Steve, did you inspire him?!"
Michael Phelps says he does not intend to compete in another Olympics once Rio 2016 is over.
Now, aged 31, the American swimming legend has won 22 Olympic gold medals.
