Irish woman live-tweets abortion trip
An Irish woman live-tweeted her journey to England to have an abortion this weekend. The woman, and a friend accompanying her, began posting early Saturday morning, describing their mission as "Two women, one procedure, 48 hours away from home."
The tweets from @TwoWomenTravel (who remain anonymous) were all directed at the Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny. Abortion is a big political issue in the Republic of Ireland, where it's illegal except in certain circumstances. More than 165,000 women travelled from Ireland to Great Britain for the procedure between 1980 and 2015, according to the UK's Department of Health.
RóisÃn Ingle is one of those women. She's also an editor with the Irish Times and producer of The Women Podcast. She thanks @TwoWomenTravel for shining light on a journey that thousands of Irish women have been forced to make.
