Litter campaigner warned by council for cleaning up

A man in Sunderland has told 5 live that he's received a warning from the council for trying to tidy up.

David Render organised groups of volunteers to help get rid of litter in his local area.

The campaigner spoke to 5live’s Peter Allen about how he was warned with action by Sunderland Council for breaching health and safety rules.

"I tried to get people together to pick up litter and fix some of the broken things. I tried to liaise with the council and do it on their authority. Every time I wrote to them I would get a ‘no’, or no response.â€

Sunderland City Council has said it, “welcomes and encourages members of the public to help keep their communities clean and tidy. Yet, the council has concerns when some of Mr Render's activities are endangering himself and other members of the public. The council has expressed these concerns to Mr Render and that he should refrain from some of his activity.â€
