Last BHS stores close their doors for final time

Final 22 branches shut down ending 88 years of British retail history.

The last 22 BHS stores close their doors today, marking the end of 88 years of trading, the loss of thousands of jobs, and some heavy criticism of how the chain was managed.

Simon Prager worked for the company for 16 years – he was the manager of BHS in Poole, and is overseeing the closure of the Cribbs Causeway Branch in Bristol. He said: “I think the whole of retail is struggling with the change in the dynamic of high street stores and internet sales. It has never been sugar coated as to the issues we have, but I still don’t think anyone thought this would happen.”

The chain went into administration in March, affecting 11,000 jobs. Sir Philip Green, who owned BHS from 2000 to 2015, has been criticised for how he managed the chain.

“We may have had a bit of Woolworths syndrome where we became nothing to nobody instead of everything to everyone. Christmas this year will be odd on the high street without BHS,” added the former store manager.
