My story of sexual abuse is changing perceptions in Ukraine
Nastya Melnychenko's decision to declare that she's been the victim of sexual assault has inspired tens of thousands of Ukrainian and Russian women and men to admit online their own suffering of sexual violence. She was assaulted twice as a child and then in her early 20s, her former partner violently forced her onto a bed, undressed her, and took photographs, threatening to post the pictures on the internet if she did not stay with him. Until recently she did not dare to admit that she was a victim of such sexual violence; she was terrified that the homemade porn would appear on the internet. But she had changed her mind and went public. A huge reaction followed, inspiring hashtag I am not afraid.
