Boy's flood death: Parents want new inquiry
The parents of a seven-year-old boy who died during flooding in Surrey two years ago are calling for an independent inquiry, after a coroner ruled his death was an accident as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning from a petrol pump used by the family to get rid of the floodwaters from the basement of their home.
Zane Gbangbola's parents had disputed post-mortem tests that found he died from carbon monoxide poisoning due to the pump.
They believed hydrogen cyanide fumes had been released from the floodwaters running off a former landfill site next to their home, and that they were responsible for their son's death.
Zane's father Kye Gbangbola and his mother Nicole Lawler told Victoria why they wanted an independent inquiry.
Spelthorne Borough Council, whose area includes Chertsey in Surrey, said there was "no evidence" a leak of hydrogen cyanide from a former landfill site near the house had caused Zane's death, adding there was "no wider risk" to the public.
