Who is the goddess Lakshmi?
Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and good fortune. According to the creation story of the Puranas, she came to existence in the churning of the ocean of milk. Lakshmi came to represent the qualities of blessing, prosperity, fertility, beauty, good fortune and, more recently, political order. Melvyn is joined in the studio by Lecturer in Religious Studies Jessica Frazier, Senior Lecturer in South Asian Studies Jacqueline Suthren-Hirst and Professor of Comparative Religion and Philosophy Chakravarthi Ram-Prasad.
