President Barack Obama has said it could be possible to have a manned mission to Mars by the 2030s. In an opinion piece published today, Mr Obama said 'I still have the same sense of wonder about our space program that I did as a child. It represents an essential part of our character'. Dr Marek Kukula, Public Astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, explains what such a mission would entail.
