A campaign has been started to 鈥榬eclaim鈥� the term 鈥楨ssex girl鈥� and get it removed from the dictionary.

鈥楨ssex girl鈥� is defined in the Oxford English Dictionary as 鈥榓 contemptuous term applied to a type of young woman, supposedly to be found in and around Essex, and variously characterized as unintelligent, promiscuous, and materialistic鈥�.

Juliet Thomas from Essex events company The Mother Hub set up the campaign. She says the definition 鈥渄escribes a very, very dated stereotype鈥�.

鈥淭here鈥檚 not much more you could say to a woman that is offensive, it鈥檚 incredibly offensive,鈥� she added.
