£250,000 gold coin found in child’s toy box
A man from Essex could soon be £250,000 richer, thanks to a small gold coin that was lying in his son's toy box. The Queen Anne 'Vigo' five guinea gold coin is 313 years old and is one of only 20 to have ever been made. The man had no idea of its value until he showed it to Boningtons’ auctioneers coin specialist, Gregory Tong.
Gregory immediately recognised it and told 5 live Drive, “in the coin world it is such a known coin.”
“It is the rarest English milled coin. It’s a beautiful thing and it’s a one in a million shot.”
The coin will go under the hammer at the Essex auctioneer’s Epping saleroom in November 2016.
