Murray’s rise to world number one is ‘exceptional’ – Navratilova
Andy Murray’s rise to world number one is an ‘amazing accomplishment’ according to 18 times Grand Slam champion Martina Navratilova.
Murray will become the first British singles player to be world number one since computerised rankings began in 1973.
The Scot, 29, needed to reach the final of the Paris Masters to replace Novak Djokovic - and did so when Milos Raonic pulled out before their semi-final.
He will be officially confirmed as world number one on Monday.
“To get to number one is an exceptional thing, it’s an amazing accomplishment,” Navratilova said.
“The fact it came this late in his playing career shows how determined and focused he is,” she added.
