How a teacher overcame her embarrassment to become the world’s loudest person
Annalisa Flanagan, a schoolteacher and the current Guinness World Record holder for the title of world’s loudest person, told 5 live that she almost gave the competition “a miss” as “it looked embarrassing”. Annalisa set the record when attending a church camp ‘record night’ in 1992. Annalisa explained what changed her mind:
“I have a twin sister; a couple of the girls came over and told me that she was winning the shouting competition so it was very much: If she can do it, so can I”
Annalisa’s record breaking attempt came in at 121.7 decibels, which is 1.7 dBA louder than a thunderclap. She added: “I shouted the word quiet; my inspiration was the 6 girls who I was looking after for the week, who never seemed to want to go to bed or anything. I thought of them and shouted as loud as I could!”
