Upson: Give England players responsibility
Former England defender Matt Upson says players should be trusted to go out and socialise while on international duty.
Upson was talking to 5 live's Mark Pougatch about the images that emerged of Wayne Rooney at a wedding at the team's hotel following England's 3-0 victory over Scotland.
Rooney has since apologised "unreservedly" to interim England boss Gareth Southgate for his behaviour.
"I do not understand why players, if they are given that time, why can't they put some casual clothing on and disappear to a restaurant?" said the former Arsenal and West Ham defender.
Upson, who represented England at the 2010 World Cup, said it is difficult to pass time in the hotel.
"Give them the responsibility to behave properly and then perhaps you might not end up with situations like what happened on Saturday," he added.
