Dawson 'extremely disappointed' at Fijian players' pay
Matt Dawson says Fiji's players getting paid £400 for facing England is 'farcical'
Matt Dawson says Fiji's players getting paid £400 for facing England is 'farcical'.
When England play the Pacific Islanders on Saturday, The Rugby Football Union will bank around £10m - giving Fiji £75,000 as a "goodwill gesture".
“I was extremely disappointed to see the figures of some of the Fijian players getting £400 for playing [against England on Saturday]," he told Sonja McLaughlan on 5 live Rugby.
“The whole model needs to change and that probably comes from World Rugby. It shouldn’t matter who is playing who, there could be a formula that can work out so the players are payed accordingly.
“Not everyone is going to be on £22,000 when they play at Twickenham but there is such an enormous discrepancy between the two it's absolutely farcical.
“I feel for the Fijian players, they're playing in front of massive crowds, they're great ambassadors - arguably some of the best ambassadors of world rugby come from Fiji.
“The way they've been so good with the game across the world, and you're paying them £400, I mean come on. That wouldn't even get them a chauffeur home.â€
