New research carried out by Trading Standards suggests that 99% of fake Apple phone chargers failed a basic safety test, with only three out of 400 tested having enough insulation to protect against electric shocks.

Technology expert Tom Cheesewright told 5 live: "A lot of them are not safe in a variety of ways. This [research] was speared in part by a couple of deaths, one in Australia and one in Thailand, where people were given electric shocks and killed while holding their phone and using a counterfeit charger."

He added: "You get what you pay for unfortunately. If you are buying primarily on price and it is ridiculously cheap - there's probably a good reason for that."
