Is cheerleading set to appear in the Olympics?
It may not involve pom poms or even cheering, but competitive cheerleading could be part of the Olympics after being given provisional recognition by the IOC.
The discipline could apply to become part of the Olympic programme within the next three years. However, “All Star” cheerleading will look very different to the traditional type seen at American football matches.
Anthony Ridgeway, a cheerleading coach and choreographer for Unity All-Stars and Team England, told 5 live Drive:
“It’s a very athletic discipline that involves combinations of tumbling, acrobatics and dance and performance skills as well.”
