It鈥檚 a Christmas tradition in many households to read (or watch one of the many adaptations) of Charles Dickens鈥� A Christmas Carol. But how well do you know the origins of the story?

Speaking to 5 live鈥檚 Phil Williams, actor Simon Callow explained how a 鈥減arliamentary report on the employment of children in mines鈥� was the catalyst for the famous novel.

鈥淸Dickens] wanted to strike a hammer blow on behalf of those children鈥�, he said, 鈥渁nd by extension all those who were disadvantaged and the subject of the vast social injustice that was all around them.鈥�
