Stephen Daldry

Apart from working on the opening and closing ceremonies of the London 2012 Olympics, director Stephen Daldry has never worked on television until now. He made his name on stage in 1992 with a production of An Inspector Calls so successful it remains a West End favourite to this day - and then shot into the Hollywood big league, receiving multiple Oscar nominations for his films Billy Elliot, The Hours and The Reader. Now he’s making his small screen debut with Netflix drama The Crown, which focusses on Queen Elizabeth II’s early reign.

It’s inspired by Peter Morgan’s stage play The Audience, which Daldry directed. Morgan has also written the 10-part series, reportedly the UK’s most expensive TV drama with a budget of 100 million pounds.
