Student discovers £5 note worth £50,000 in Christmas card

One student in Scotland received a Christmas present they weren’t expecting when they discovered a £5 note worth up to £50,000 in their Christmas card.

It is one of four special notes that feature an engraved portrait of Jane Austen, created by micro-engraver Graham Short, to mark the 200th anniversary of her death next year.

Tony Huggins-Haig runs the gallery that launched the project and told 5 live Drive the student, who wishes to remain anonymous, was “absolutely bowled away” by the discovery.

It is the second note to be discovered after one was found in a café in South Wales earlier this month. The other two remain in circulation in England and Northern Ireland.
