Vinyl record sales hit 25 year high

A record shop owner has told 5 live he is “astonished” vinyl has made such a comeback in the last year.
Phil Barton, who owns the Sister Ray independent record shop in London, told 5 live’s Colletta Smith that the vinyl format “should have died out years ago” but there was a “remarkable” three million LPs sold last year; a 25 year high.

Phil went on to say the resurgence had helped his business as “ten years ago I would have given you the keys to my shop back and said ‘thank you very much, I’ve had enough’ but now we’re back”.

Sales of CDs are going in the opposite direction, with11% fewer being sold in 2016.

UK labels' association the BPI's end of year UK recorded music market report showed how sales performed across physical formats, downloads and streaming. Overall consumption of recorded music rose 1.5% last year, driven by a surge in audio streaming and the vinyl revival.
