Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston: ‘I’ve got a proper beef head for 2017’
Golfer Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston saw the most successful year of his career in 2016, becoming a fans’ favourite and rising from 220 to 86 in the world rankings.
He hopes to progress and play in America in 2017 after snagging his first European title and coming 8th in the Open Championship last year.
He spoke to 5 live about the origins of his unusual nickname, ‘Beef’, which he says he’s had since he was 12-years-old.
He said: “a friend told me my hair looked like I had a big bit of beef on my head, and that was it.”
“I’m definitely going to keep my beard - it shouldn’t matter what you look like to play sport, as long as you’re a nice person,” he added.
