John Tavener on Webern, "the most spiritual composer who ever lived"
"Webern's music is like a distant ray of God: tiny, exquisite, mystical. [Its] inner silence is such an important gift for me personally. I feel so lonely in a world that only contemplates the fleeting and the ugly."
The late Sir John Tavener, himself a renowned composer of sacred and spiritual music, speaks movingly of his admiration for the Austrian composer Anton Webern in this piece of archive audio footage from 2005.
Breaking Free: The Minds that Changed Music is a week of programming on Radio 3 devoted to composers of the Second Viennese School.
