Former Submarine Commander: May ‘exactly right’ not to comment on Trident ‘misfire’

The Prime Minister is under pressure to reveal what she knew about a reported misfire of a Trident missile by a Royal Navy Submarine in June last year.

It happened just weeks before the Commons voted to spend £40bn renewing the nuclear deterrent.

The Ministry of Defence says that the test fire of the unarmed missile off the coast of Florida was successful, but it's now emerged that there was a problem with the missile during its flight.

5 live spoke to former Submarine Commander, Steve Aiken, who said Theresa May is “exactly right” not to comment.

He said: “There is a convention that we don’t talk about issues to do with a deterrent, we don’t talk about submarine operations.”

“Of course it has to be secretive, it’s the nuclear deterrent and the main insurance policy that this country has,” he added.
