Suggs: Independent venues taught us 'how to entertain'
“Madness” front man Suggs says independent music venues taught the band "how to entertain"
Legendary British band “Madness” have presented a Blue Plaque to the venue where they played their first gig 40 years ago - The Dublin Castle in London.
It’s part of a campaign to promote independent music venues across the UK, and the pub is where Madness first honed their skills during a yearlong residency shortly after forming in 1979.
Front-man Suggs told 5 live's Sean Farrington: "Playing a venue like this is where you do learn what people like. It's not until you play in front of people and you see them leaving the venue that you realise your songs aren't going in the right direction. So over the weeks and months we had a residency here, we really learnt what it is to entertain an audience."
He added: “Our career has totally turned around. We used to make our money out of records and not much money from playing live. Now we really make a bit out of records and most of our money comes from playing live.”
