‘Dad didn’t understand my mental health problems’
New figures released today suggest that more than half of people with a mental health illness have lost contact with a loved one, because of stigma and discrimination.
Oli from London, who has been diagnosed with bipolar, anxiety and ADHD. He said: “My Dad didn’t understand, it was sort of a ‘man up, sort yourself out, get on with it’ kind of thing and it took me to my teens to find out and I’ve not seen him in years.”
The UK wide survey into the impact of mental health stigma showed that almost two fifths (38%) of respondents had been negatively treated as a result of their mental health problem.
“The littlest things make the difference when it comes to mental health, a cup of tea or a chat, just something to make you feel like you’re not alone,” Oli added.
