The Oscar nominated adaptation of August Wilson's play Fences is released in UK cinemas on Friday. The film is directed by and stars Denzel Washington and explores race relations in 1950s America.

The award-winning actor and director tells our arts editor Will Gompertz that while Fences focuses on an African-American family, the themes are "universal".
