A former supermarket worker has told ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ 5 live that a customer threatened him with a used needle, when he attempted to stop a thief stealing from the store.
The British Retail Consortium say there has been a 40 percent increase in violence and other forms of abuse against retail workers in the past year around the UK.
Speaking to Emma Barnett, 'Paul' not his real name said that his employer was more concerned about stock than staff's safety.
