Claudia Aradou, Reader in International Politics at Kings College, London charts the chequered history of a form of communication which arose in the context of the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Cold War. The 'hotline' telephone system established between countries in order to protect us from nuclear annihilation has brought us close to extinction on more than one occasion - by accident. Laurie Taylor finds out how.
