Why retiring to the countryside is a bad idea

If you watch Escape to the Country, you’ll have noticed how many of the people planning to do it are retired, or coming up to retirement. You see them turning their backs on busy cities to move to a field in the middle of nowhere. Is that wise? No, according to the insurance company Prudential. It’s urging anybody thinking of moving when they retire to get expert advice. Prudential surveyed 2000 city dwellers about escaping to the country. More than four out of ten said they’d always planned to move away one day. One man who settled in the city as he’s getting older is The Beatles biographer Hunter Davies. His wife, the novelist Margaret Forster died last year. Until then, they’d had the best of both worlds.
